sheltered bay amongst mature pohutukawa trees. Short
walk to shop, info centre, wharf, fuel depot and
District Nurse. A popular place for families and boaties, Akapoua is close to the DoC track network including the
Kaiaraara kauri dam, waterfall track. Good fishing in the harbour. |

Awana

Tent Sites: 60
Surrounded by farmland and dunes, campsites are next to the Awana
estuary. 300m to a great
surf beach. Close to historic sites. A barrier divides camping
areas from a picnic area. Keep an eye out for endangered bird life.
Vehicle access to the beach is not permitted. No shade. |

Located on the edge of Whangaparapara Harbour. No vehicle access.
The Green is the smallest DOC
campground on the island. North of here you enter the track
network and the forest road mountain bike track. Access to the Hot Springs and
Port FitzRoy to the North. |

Whangapoua DOC |
Tent Sites: 75
Set in farmland at the Whangapoua estuary and the best right hand surf bar
in NZ.
Views of Mt Hirakimata (Hobson) and Rakitu Island. Close to the
Harataonga Coastal walk and low tide access across
the estuary to the Wairarapa grave site at the Northern end of the
beach. Keep an eye out for endangered bird life nesting on this beach.

Bookings: These are essential. Spaces
are limited and most campgrounds are booked out during the holiday season.

Fires: Because of the high fire risk on Great Barrier Island,
campfires are only permitted
at DoC fireplaces provided at Akapoua and Whangaparapara campgrounds.
Use wood only if it is supplied. Please do not destroy native vegetation.
Dogs: Dogs and other domestic animals are not permitted on
conservation lands, including
campgrounds. All campgrounds are near special wildlife habitats, home of
endangered birds
like the brown teal. If you bring any pets, don't be offended if you are
asked to leave.
Camp Fees: Fees are payable at time of booking. Otherwise, a
self-registration system is
in operation at each campground, although a campground supervisor may
collect fees
during peak periods.
